Our training program combines infectious diseases, clinical microbiology, laboratory and clinical research. Postgraduate education is carried out at different levels of training.
1. TRAINING OF MEDICAL RESIDENTS:
This program includes residents of our department and other specialties (Medicine, Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology, Public Health and Pulmonary Medicine) as well as those in subspecialty training in the departments of Intensive Care Medicine and Epidemiology. Foreign residents and physicians also participate in our educational activities within the context of an international observership program.
A. Clinical Training:
a. Infectious Diseases Ward: The resident in service rotation is responsible for the management of the patients hospitalized in the ID wards located in Section 76 of the Hacettepe University Hospital. As the primary physician of the patient, they make decisions for diagnosis and treatment, and participate actively in patient care with the other members of the ward team. They are supervised closely by a senior ID resident and the consulting academic staff member.
b. Consulting Hospital Wards: Consultations and follow-up of the consulted patients is a major constituent of education and patient care. All inpatients including the Emergency Clinics are consulted to our department when deemed necessary or helpful by their primary physicians. Separate ID teams practice in different ICUs and wards. Each ID team is led by an academic staff member who rotates every 2 months. The residents of the team rotate every month. The resident evaluates the patient consulted, plans for diagnosis and treatment with the consulting staff member, and starts following the patient daily until the infectious problem is solved. The ward patients are evaluated with the academic staff of the team routinely three days a week, and on a daily basis if in the ICU. Thus, the resident learns clinical approach to infectious diseases, how to consult a patient, and to communicate with their colleagues. The residents play a direct or indirect part in the training of the primary physician as well.
c. Outpatient Clinic: The resident learns the approach to common infectious diseases on an outpatient basis under the supervision of a junior academic staff. The follow-up visits of the patients enable a direct observation of the clinical course of an infectious disease. They can decide which patient needs hospitalization, and share it with the academic staff. They plan and carry out the diagnostic and/or therapeutic means if admission to the hospital is anticipated to be delayed for a while.
d. Training Program for Rotational Residents: A training program that consists of basic contemporary knowledge in common infectious diseases, infection control & prevention, and antimicrobial agents in clinical practice is given to the junior ID residents and those from other departments: Training Program for Rotational Residents
B. Laboratory Training:
The laboratory training program is carried out under the supervision of the academic staff manager of the departmental laboratories and in vitro research in three venues:
a. Clinical Microbiology Joint Training Program: The residents have theoretical and practical classes once a week within a joint program with the Department of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology developed for the residents in rotation in our department. The aim of the program is to refresh their knowledge in basic microbiological concepts, learn how to prepare and evaluate smears from infected sites under the microscope, and, finally how to interpret the microbiology lab results in their clinical practice.
b. ID Ward Lab: The physician gains experience in simple basic microbiological procedures. They evaluate the smears prepared from clinical samples, and incorporate the results into patient care.
c. ID Departmental Research Lab: This laboratory is only for research purposes. The residents gain a broad view about the studies done in this lab, but they do not have to participate in this activity.
C. Infection Control & Prevention Training (Infection Control Committee):
The aim of the training program developed and conducted by the Infection Control Committee of Hacettepe Adult and Oncology Hospitals is to teach the residents about potential infectious risks in routine clinical practice and how to prevent them. This is provided in two formats:
a. Rotation in the Infection Control Committee: The residents work with the Committee in accordance with the postgraduate core educational requirements. Duration of rotation is 3 months for ID residents, 4 months for subspecialty training in Epidemiology, 2 months for Microbiology & Clinical Microbiology residents, and finally, 1 month for Public Health residents. In addition to basic theoretical lectures, they participate actively in surveillance, Committee meetings and outbreak investigation. In addition, they take the online course and exam titled “Remote Training Program in Infection Control” prepared by the Public Health Division of the Turkish Ministry of Health.
b. Training of Residents: Residents in the Department of Medicine and those in subspecialty training for ICU are trained annually for infection control. Every resident new in Hacettepe University hospitals should take the Orientation Course for Infection Control.
2. TRAINING OF SPECIALISTS:
Specialists in various fields such as medicine, pharmacy, public health, and occupational health gain knowledge and clinical experience participate in our departmental activities for a certain period of time as needed.
3. TRAINING OF OTHER HEALTHCARE PERSONNEL:
This is mainly focused on infection prevention and control measures. Please check the related menu on the lefthand bar.
4. COMMUNITY TRAINING FOR INFECTIOUS DISEASES:
Conferences and panels are organized upon a request from a non-governmental organizations on a specific topic in infectious diseases, or when there is a need for public health (such as pandemics, etc.). HATAM (Hacettepe University HIV/AIDS Treatment and Research Center) provides intensive training in HIV/AIDS both on one-to-one basis and on a public level (//www.hatam.hacettepe.edu.tr/english/).
