Patient care can be categorized as preventive (protection from infections and infection control) and therapeutic:
I. Preventive Patient Care:
This consists of immunization against infections (vaccination), and prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections. Vaccination activity is carried out in the Adult Vaccination Unit. Procedures for infection prevention and control are performed in accordance with the Infection Control Committee of Hacettepe Adult and Oncology Hospitals.
II. Therapeutic Patient Care
1. ID Ward:
We have an ID ward located in Section 76 of the Hacettepe University Hospital. The team consists of an intern, physicians (a junior and a senior resident, an attending academic staff), nurses, a secretary and hospital housekeeping personnel. Slides are prepared from clinical samples of the ID ward patients or those consulted in other services, and evaluated microscopically in the lab located in the ward.
2. Consultation:
The major constituent of our therapeutic care is consulted patients. All inpatients including the Emergency Clinics are consulted to our department when deemed necessary or helpful by their primary physicians. Separate ID teams practice in different ICUs and wards. Each ID team is led by an academic staff member. The resident evaluates the patient consulted, plans for diagnosis and treatment with the consulting staff member, and follows the patient with the team until the infectious problem is solved.
3. ID Outpatient Clinic:
Outpatients with an appointment are evaluated on certain weekdays in our outpatient clinic. The appointments are made at the time of discharge if outpatient follow-up is required. The team consists of at least one resident, interns and a junior staff member.
In addition to the discharged patients, our patient profile includes those with any infectious problem who got an appointment for the outpatient clinic, follow-up of individuals with chronic viral infections, HSCT patients or those with hematological malignancies for a vaccination scheme, and finally, screening of patients for certain infectious diseases prior to biological treatments.
