H. Erdal Akalin, MD, FACP, FRCP, FIDSA, FESCMID, FEFIM (h)
Dr. Akalin is a graduate of Hacettepe University Medical School (1970), Ankara, Turkey. He completed his residency training in internal medicine at the University of Illinois, Chicago, USA. He was trained in the section of infectious diseases as a fellow at the same institution. He was a faculty member in the department of medicine from 1981 to 1983.
Dr. Akalin was the founder of the section of infectious diseases at Hacettepe University Medical School and Hacettepe University Hospital. He was the director of the section from 1983 to 1994. He was appointed as associate professor in 1980 and professor of internal medicine in 1988 at Hacettepe University. He was an advisor for an international pharmaceutical institution for antibiotic research and development, outcomes research and health policies from 1994 to 2007.
He is member of several scientific organizations both at national and international levels. He is the imidiate past president of Turkish Society of Internal medicine (2008-2010), and was co-chair of the Board Examination Committee of the Society for four years. He is a fellow of American College of Physicians (ACP) and Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), and honorary fellow of European Federation of Internal Medicine (EFIM). He served as the Coordinator for Clinical Practice Guidelines of European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) from 2010 to 2012. He was the director of the European School of Internal Medicine (ESIM) for 2012 and 2013. He was chosen as “Honorary fellow” by Royal College of Physicians in 2014.
Dr. Akalin published more than 250 articles in national and international scientific journals, 55 book chapters and is editor of 10 books. He presented more than 600 papers in national and international scientific meetings.
